Instructor Rating

The holder of a Commercial Pilot License or Airline Transport Pilot License may have their license endorsed with a Flight Instructor Rating - aeroplane. Initially, the pilot is endorsed as a Class 4 Flight Instructor. This allows the pilot to deliver flight training towards the issuance of a Recreational Pilot Permit, Private Pilot License, Commercial Pilot License, Night Rating, and VFR Over-the-top Rating. The Class 4 Flight Instructor may only conduct training while under the supervision of a Class 2 or Class 1 Flight Instructor.

After satisfying certain requirements (satisfactory flight test records, experience requirements, written exams, and flight tests), an instructor can upgrade their rating to a Class 3, Class 2, and Class 1 Instructor Rating. The Class 3 Flight Instructor does not require the supervision of a Class 2 or Class 1 Flight Instructor.

The Class 2 Flight Instructor may supervise Class 4 Flight Instructors and act as the Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) of a flight training unit. The Class 1 Flight Instructor may give ground school and flight training towards the endorsement of a Flight Instructor Rating.

Admission Requirements:

Age - Applicant must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
License - Applicant must have a valid Canadian Commercial Pilot License or Airline Transport Pilot License.
Citizenship - Applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or a person lawfully admitted into Canada for flight training.
Medical - Applicant must hold a valid Transport Canada Category 1 Aviation Medical Certificate issued by a Transport Canada approved Aviation Medical Examiner.
Interview - Applicant must have an interview with the Chief flight Instructor or delegate.

Training Requirements - Transport Canada:

Applicant must satisfy all training criteria as outlined in the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

An applicant shall complete in aeroplanes a minimum of 30 hours dual flight instruction, on overall pilot proficiency and the presentation of all exercises set forth in the Flight Instructor Guide and shall include a minimum of 5 hours of training in the teaching of instrument flight skills. A maximum of 5 of the 30 hours may be conducted on an approved airplane simulator or flight-training device.

Flight Test:

An applicant shall complete an instructor flight test to the standards outlined in the Flight Test Standard - Flight Instructor Rating - Airplanes, Helicopters, Aerobatics, (TP5537).
