    Private Pilot License

    Private Pilot License (PPL) permits a pilot to fly a single engine, non high-performance aircraft. A Private Pilot may not fly for reward or for remuneration. Private pilots have the option to pursue endorsements for heavier aircraft as well as Night, Aerobatics, Mountain, Instrument, Multi-Engine and VFR-Over-the-Top. The PPL is a pre-requisite for the Commercial Pilot License. Additional training necessary for these endorsements is available at Southern Skies Aviation Ltd.


    Admission Requirements:
    1. Age - Applicants may begin their training at any age, but must be 14 year of age prior to their first solo and 17 years of age prior to issuance of a Private Pilot License.
    2. Citizenship - Applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or a person lawfully admitted into Canada for flight training.
    3. Medical - Applicant must hold a valid Transport Canada Category 1 or 3 Aviation Medical certificate issued by a Transport Canada approved Aviation Medical Examiner.

    Training Requirements – Transport Canada:

    Applicant must satisfy all training criteria as outlined in the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

    1. Ground School:
      1. Applicant must have completed a minimum of 40 hours of Private Pilot ground school in the subjects listed in CAR 421.26
      2. Applicant must obtain a minimum of 60% overall on the written exam (PPAER), and a minimum of 60% in each of the four mandatory areas of Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology, and Aeronautics General Knowledge.
    2. Flight Training:
      1. Applicant must have accumulated the following minimums: 45 hours flight time, including 17 hours dual (with instructor) and 12 hours solo.
      2. Applicant must pass a practical flight test conducted by a Transport Canada Designated Flight Test Examiner.
    3. Licensing:
      1. Applicant must be 14 years

    The following cost breakdown is based on Transport Canada minimum requirements. Student proficiency will vary. Hours in excess of those listed here must be paid for by the student at the rates listed.

    Ground school/Books/Equipment must be paid in full at start of course.
    33 hours of dual training at $175 per hour $5775
    12 hours of solo training at $125 per hour $1500
    12 hours ground briefing at $50 per hour $600
    Flight Training may be paid for ahead of time, or immediately following the flight lesson.

    1. Hourly Fuel Surcharge (Set Monthly – Please call for current pricing)
    2. Aircraft Rental for Flight Test @ $125/hour (Cessna 172)
    3. Payable to Transport Canada on date of testing/licensing:
      1. Transport Canada Written Test - $150
      2. Transport Canada Licensing Fee - $55
      3. Transport Canada Flight Test - $200
      4. Authorized Person - $50
    Integrated Commercial Course

    Prospective Commercial Pilot applicants should consider the Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. 10 month Integrated Commercial Pilot Course to achieve their aviation goals. This 10 month, intensive course includes the Private Pilot License, Night Rating, VFR-OTT, Basic Aerobatics, Emergency Maneuver Training, Mountain Performance Courses, Instrument Training, Multi-Engine Rating and an intensive ground school. No prior aviation experience required - credit may be offered for Private Pilot License. Be an employable commercial pilot in 10 months!
