    Recreational Pilot License

    Recreational Pilot Permit (RPP) permits daylight flights, within Canada and with no more than one passenger. Ground school is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. All pilots need to be familiar with basic aviation theory and procedures and must pass a Transport Canada written examination. This permit does not allow for the addition of endorsements such as night, float, or instrument, but may count as time towards your Private Pilot License.


    Admission Requirements:
    1. Age - Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years of age before they can receive this permit. Training may begin at any age.
    2. Citizenship - Applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or a person lawfully admitted into Canada for flight training.
    3. Medical - Applicant must hold a valid Transport Canada Category 4 Aviation Medical certificate issued by a licensed physician.
    4. Interview - Applicant must have an interview with the Chief Flight Instructor or delegate.

    Training Requirements – Transport Canada:

    Applicant must satisfy all training criteria as outlined in the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

    1. Ground School:
      1. There is no mandatory ground school, but a minimum of 40 hours Private Pilot Ground School is recommended.
      2. Applicant must obtain a minimum of 60% overall on the written exam Recreational Pilot Permit Aeroplane (RPPAE) , and a minimum of 60% in each of the four mandatory areas of Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology and Aeronautics General Knowledge.
    2. Flight Training:
      1. Applicant must complete a minimum of 25 flight hours, including 15 hours dual (with instructor) and 5 hours solo.
      2. Applicant must pass a practical flight test conducted by a Transport Canada Designated Flight Test Examiner.

    The following cost breakdown is based on Transport Canada minimum requirements. Student proficiency will vary. Hours in excess of those listed here must be paid for by the student at the rates listed.

    Books and Equipment: $262
    20 hours dual training @ $170.00 per hour. $3400
    5 hours solo training on @ 125.00 per hour. $625
    10 hours ground school/brief @ $50.00 per hour. $500
    Total: $5027

    Flight Training may be paid for ahead of time, or immediately following the flight lesson.

    Additional Expenses:

    2. Aircraft Rental for Flt. Test @ $125/hour Cessna172or $350/hour Piper Aztec
    3. Payable to Transport Canada on date of testing/licensing:
      1. Transport Canada Written Test - $105
      2. Transport Canada Licensing Fee - $55
      3. Transport Canada Flight Test - $200
      4. Authorized Person - $50

    Integrated Commercial Course:

    Prospective Commercial Pilot applicants should consider the Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. 10 month Integrated Commercial Pilot Course to achieve their aviation goals. This 10 month, intensive course includes the Private Pilot License, Night Rating, VFR-OTT, Basic Aerobatics, Emergency Maneuver Training, Mountain Performance Courses, Instrument Training, Multi-Engine Rating and an intensive ground school. No prior aviation experience required - credit may be offered for Private Pilot License. Be an employable commercial pilot in 10 months!
